Grecotel White Palace is a stunning five-star hotel located on the largest Greek island, Crete. Close to the pretty town of Rethymnon along the north coast, it features open-style spaces with luxurious touches. Enjoying fantastic sea views, the hotel has three saltwater pools and two infinity pools (for selected room types), so relaxation is high on the agenda here. Set on the beachfront it benefits from a Blue Flag beach right on the doorstep.

The design is contemporary with white décor and hints of turquoise throughout making it very calm and tranquil. There are also a number of dining options with menus designed around local and international cuisine made from the freshest ingredients to cater to all tastes.

At Agreco Farm you can dine in the rustic and traditional farmhouse where you can enjoy a meal that has been freshly prepared from farm to table (transfer not included - reservations required). The outdoor seating area has the most lovely views across Crete with the rolling hills and vineyards and the Mediterranean Sea in the distance. For those cooler nights, you can sit inside the farmhouse with authentic stone walls and rustic décor oozing with Cretan charm.

Children can even enjoy being a farmer for the day at Agreco Farm with lots of activities on offer including picking their own vegetables and baking. There is also a Kids Club onsite where they can take part in competitions and games, and even a disco so they can sing and dance all day long.

A 4 star hotel striving to be 5 star but mostly failing.

I didn’t read the reviews before going, it was booked through a travel agent, but just saw how many 5 star reviews it got so took that at face value. I’m bewildered. Either my wife and I have been really unlucky or the reviews were written in expectation of 4* standards by people who got a great discount. If we’d booked this at 4* prices and expectations I think we’d have been ok with most things except the room. But on the basis of our 7 nights this is nothing like a 5* hotel. Plusses first, the sunset bar is lovely, the views of the sunset were beautiful and general feel of that area was on point. The sunbeds around the main pool are comfy, we were told the hotel was full but there were certainly no “sunbed wars” any more than you’d find at any communal hotel pool. If you wanted one of the 30/40ish premium spots you needed to be on them by about 8.30/9am but id say that’s pretty normal. There were loads of beds around the hotel although if you were a bit later and wanted a sunny spot you’d need to go to the activity pool. There were also lots of shaded loungers which some people prefer. The standard of the buffet food was inconsistent but some of it was genuinely good. We enjoyed the Asia White and White a la carte restaurants, the Italian was nice at lunch but not as good for us in the evening. Staff were generally really smiley and pleasant. There were lot of families and young children but I thought behaviour was really good and the main pool had a relaxed and tranquil feel so no issues for a there. Now the disappointments. Our room was a basic level double with a garden view. It was absolutely nowhere near a 5* standard. I mean not even close. It was small, the bathroom had a shower attachment over a tiny bath, water covered the floor when you used it and the balcony looked like something from a 1990s lads holiday to Magaluf. White concrete, tiled floor, two plastic chairs and a view of the road. Yes there are some palm trees and yes there are mountains in the distance but that doesn’t make up for the main road, the car hire company or the service road. The lift to the upper floors was a battered service lift with a manual sliding door. It’s a long time since I saw a more basic room and to sell it as “luxury” is laughable. The second major issue is looking the a la cartes. If you read the reviews in detail first you’ll know to book before you travel. We didn’t and I dont expect to have to at a 5* hotel. On arrival we couldn’t book a single restaurant and when we asked reception for help we were told to WhatsApp the concierge service. I did and got a reply telling me I should’ve booked a week before more stay?! After 24hrs of wrangling we did get reservations in all the restaurants, it’d be really boring to type out the whole experience of getting that resolved but it was a satisfactory ending to a very unsatisfactory complaints process. We did also try to upgrade or change rooms but were told all the upgrade options were fully booked and any room change would have the same shower/bathroom set up. Service wise I can’t believe how many 5 star reviews also reference poor service, as if poor service is just one of those things. Service round the pools is poor, not enough staff, infrequent accessibility and our drinks were completely forgotten twice. Similarly at breakfast our coffee was forgotten twice and tea brought by mistake on a third morning. The staff work so hard, there aren’t enough of them and some of them looked exhausted. There’s no in app drink ordering facilities and no food/snack service around the pool. As I say, sunbeds around the main pool were good and we had no issues getting on them. On one morning we went into Rethymno so we’re late to the pool and had to go to the activity pool for beds. No issue finding two beds at all but unless I was missing something, access to that pool was via either the service road at the front of the hotel or via a series of fire doors at the end of corridors that had been wedged open. Really odd. The sunbeds around the activity pool are of lower quality, much lower to the ground, and the umbrellas are mesh rather than canvas so still let sun through. It feels like a different hotel. I could go on with lots of other little things that in themselves were petty and with a better overall experience wouldn’t have bothered us, but in a 5* hotel I’m not expecting sparkling wine served in large wine glasses not flutes or, on one occasion, white wine served in a Campari branded balloon glass, it was like a bucket of white wine. But I don’t want to over play the service issues, it’s not that it was really really bad, just not at the standard the hotel markets itself. If you go and love it that’s great, I suspect if you book a better standard room with a private/swim up room and book your restaurants in advance you’ll have a much better experience but there it is, our view is that there are much much better hotels out there in the price range and don’t touch the standard rooms.
